The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo. One of CHCF’s priorities is to improve care for people with serious illnesses by expanding access to and quality of palliative care services. Palliative care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of an illness, and it is based on need, not prognosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and it can be provided along with curative treatment.
